Global climate change will impact crops and grasslands, affecting growth and yield. However, is not clear how the combination of warming and increased atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations ([CO2]) will affect the photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry and the photosynthetic tissue photoinhibition and photoprotection on tropical forages. Here, we evaluated the effects of elevated [CO2] (∼600 µmol mol-1) and warming (+2 °C increase temperature) on the photochemistry of photosystem II and the photoprotection strategies of a tropical C4 forage Panicum maximum Jacq. grown in a Trop-T-FACE facility under well-watered conditions without nutrient limitation. Analysis of the maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm), the effective PSII quantum yield Y(II), the quantum yield of regulated energy dissipation Y(NPQ), the quantum yield of non-regulated energy dissipation Y(NO), and the malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in leaves revealed that the photosynthetic apparatus of plants did not suffer photoinhibitory damage, and plants did not increase lipid peroxidation in response to warming and [CO2] enrichment. Plants under warming treatment showed a 12% higher chlorophyll contents and a 58% decrease in α-tocopherol contents. In contrast, carotenoid composition (zeaxanthin and ß-carotene) and ascorbate levels were not altered by elevated [CO2] and warming. The elevated temperature increased both net photosynthesis rate and aboveground biomass but elevated [CO2] increased only net photosynthesis. Adjustments in chlorophyll, de-epoxidation state of the xanthophylls cycle, and tocopherol contents suggest leaves of P. maximum can acclimate to 2 °C warmer temperature and elevated [CO2] when plants are grown with enough water and nutrients during tropical autumn-winter season.

Rabbit production is increasing in developing countries and can play a crucial role in the fight against poverty. The current work assessed the effect on rabbit does' reproduction and young kits' growth when either Panicum maximum, common name Guinea grass, or Desmodium tortuosum, common name Beggarweed is included in their diet. Diets ReC and GrC (standard granulated diets) served as control diets, formulated for doe Reproduction and kit Growth respectively. The trial diets were diets RePan/GrPan (diet ReC/GrC supplemented with dry P. maximum) and diets ReDes/GrDes (diet ReC/GrC supplemented with dry D. tortuosum). Thirty-six primiparous local breed five-month old rabbit does were randomly allocated to each one of the three dietary treatments. After a 15-day dietary adaptation period, does were each bred to one of 12, related, breeding males. Does were then assigned to individual maternity cages maintaining the same dietary treatment for the ensuing 65 days of the trial (30 days of gestation + 35 days of suckling). Thus, there were a total of 12 replicates per treatment: diet ReC, diet RePan or diet ReDes. At weaning, 72 kits, from the three adult feed treatment groups, were, while maintaining the integrity of the feed group of their individual mothers, divided into 12 blocks with 6 weaned kits per block, with each block allocated one of the three diets. Thus, for each of the three diets there were four separate blocks, i.e., four replicates, each with six group-housed weaned kits that received a growth diet which contained the same supplement or not as their mother diet to which they had access prior to weaning; the control diet GrC (Composition slightly different from Diet ReC composition) and trial diets GrPan and GrDes over a 3-day transition phase were adapted to the weaned kits physiological state and fed for a total of 56 days. The results indicated that the use of D. tortuosum significantly improved (P < 0.05) litter size, milk quantity, and kit survival rate from birth to weaning as compared with both control and RePan diets. The study showed that after weaning, compared with control and GrPan diets, the use of D. tortuosum increased (P < 0.05) the growth performance of weaned kits, improved meat nutritional quality by reducing (P < 0.05) cholesterol concentration and increasing (P < 0.05) the n-3 fatty acid proportion, and also reduced the individual kit feed cost to slaughter weight.

Periods of soil water stress have been recurrent in the Cerrado region and have become a growing concern for Brazilian tropical pasture areas. Thus, the search for forage grasses more tolerant to water stress has intensified recently in order to promote more sustainable livestock. In a greenhouse experiment, the degree of water stress tolerance of nine tropical forage grass cultivars was studied under different soil water regimes. The investigation followed a 9 × 3 factorial design in four randomized blocks. Nine cultivars from five species of perennial forage grasses were tested: Urochloa brizantha ('BRS Piatã', 'Marandu', and 'Xaraés'), Panicum maximum ('Aruana', 'Mombaça', and 'Tanzânia'), Pennisetum glaucum ('ADR 300'), Urochloa ruziziensis ('Comum'), and Paspalum atratum ('Pojuca'). These cultivars were grown in pots under three soil water regimes (high soil water regime-HSW (non-stressful condition), middle soil water regime-MSW (moderate water stress), and low soil water regime-LSW (severe water stress)). Plants were exposed to soil water stress for 25 days during the tillering and stalk elongation phases. Twelve tolerance indices, including tolerance index (TOL), mean production (MP), yield stability index (YSI), drought resistance index (DI), stress tolerance index (STI), geometric mean production (GMP), yield index (YI), modified stress tolerance (k1STI and k2STI), stress susceptibility percentage index (SSPI), abiotic tolerance index (ATI), and harmonic mean (HM), were calculated based on shoot biomass production under non-stressful (YP) and stressful (YS) conditions. Soil water stress decreased leaf area, plant height, tillering capacity, root volume, and shoot and root dry matter production in most cultivars, with varying degrees of reduction among tropical forage grasses. Based on shoot biomass production under controlled greenhouse conditions, the most water-stress-tolerant cultivars were P. maximum cv. Mombaça and cv. Tanzânia under the MSW regime and P. maximum cv. Aruana and cv. Mombaça under the LSW regime. P. maximum cv. Mombaça has greater adaptability and stability of shoot biomass production when grown under greenhouse conditions and subjected to soil water stress. Therefore, this forage grass should be tested under field conditions to confirm its forage production potential for cultivation in tropical regions with the occurrence of water stress. The MP, DI, STI, GMP, YI, k2STI, and HM tolerance indices were the most suitable for identifying forage grass cultivars with greater water stress tolerance and a high potential for shoot biomass production under LSW regime.

It is believed that indaziflam gives a longer period of weed control compared to clomazone, irrespective of the type or texture of the soil. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate pre-emergent control in five problematic weed species of family Poaceae to sugarcane, using the herbicides indaziflam and clomazone in two soils of different textures. Two experiments were carried out, one in a soil of a sandy-loam texture and the other in a clayey soil. For both experiments, a randomised block design of split plots was chosen, with four replications. The treatments consisted of the herbicides indaziflam (75 and 100 g ai ha-1), clomazone (1080 g ai ha-1) and a control with no herbicide. In the subplots, the treatments were Digitaria horizontalis, Panicum maximum, Rottboellia cochinchinensis, Urochloa decumbens and Urochloa plantaginea. Both herbicides were more effective in the clayey soil, but with indaziflam (100 g ai ha-1), more than 90% control of the weeds remained after 240 days after application (DAA), whereas for clomazone, control remained only up to 90 DAA. The herbicide clomazone did not satisfactorily control the weeds in the sandy-loam soil. The herbicide indaziflam did not control U. decumbens in the sandy-loam soil. D. horizontalis and R. cochinchinensis were the most sensitive species to the herbicide indaziflam, irrespective of soil texture.

ABSTRACT: Colic outbreaks in horses have been associated with the grazing of several Megathyrsus maximus (Sin. Panicum maximum) cultivars in the North and Central-West regions of Brazil. In this paper, we report a horse colic outbreak in the Southeast region of Brazil caused by ingestion of the Colonião cultivar of M. maximus, which has not previously been considered as toxic. The five affected horses belonged to the Veterinary Platoon based at the Central Ammunition Deposit of the Brazilian Army in the city of Paracambi, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The horses had access to treated water and commercial concentrate, and were located in a field of M. maximus at the time of the outbreak. All horses exhibited clinical signs of colic and bloat, and three of them died. The extend of the clinical course ranged from four to five days in the three animals that died; in the two animals that recovered from the colic episodes, the extend of the clinical courses were 10 and 15 days. Necropsy findings revealed intestinal and gastric bloating and hemorrhages involving the intestinal wall. Light microscopy showed moderate diffuse lymphoplasmacytic and eosinophilic enteritis with multifocal erosions, in addition to submucosal edema associated with multifocal vasculitis. The pathogenesis of colic caused by M. maximus ingestion in horses has not yet been elucidated. Some authors have suggested that higher starch concentrations in M. maximus during the rainy season may be responsible for the toxicity of this plant. However, the findings of this study do not support this hypothesis. As a prophylactic measure, it is suggested that horses do not graze exclusively M. maximus at the beginning of rainy periods, in which regrowth of this grass occurs. In Brazil, outbreaks of horse colic associated with ingestion of varieties of Megathyrsus can also occur outside the North and Midwest regions, under specific climate conditions.


RESUMO: Surtos de cólica em equinos vêm sendo associados ao pastejo de várias cultivares de Megathyrsus maximus (Sin. Panicum maximum) nas regiões Norte e Centro-Oeste do Brasil. Neste trabalho relata-se um surto de cólica em equinos determinado pela ingestão da variedade Colonião de M. maximus, cultivar até então não descrita como tóxico. Os cinco equinos, oriundos do Pelotão de Veterinária do Centro de munição do Exército situado no município de Paracambi/RJ, estavam em uma mesma pastagem de M. maximus, tinham acesso à água tratada e ao concentrado comercial para equinos. Todos os equinos tiveram sinais clínicos de cólica por timpanismo e três deles morreram. O curso clínico variou de quatro a cinco dias nos três equinos que morreram e de 10 a 15 dias nos dois equinos que recuperaram-se da cólica. À necropsia, os principais achados foram timpanismo intestinal e gástrico e hemorragias na parede intestinal. À microscopia havia enterite linfoplasmocítica e eosinofílica difusa moderada com erosões multifocais e edema submucoso associado à vasculite multifocal. A patogênese da cólica pela ingestão de M. maximus ainda não foi elucidada, no entanto, alguns autores têm sugerido que uma maior concentração de amido presente na forrageira durante o período de chuvas possa ser responsável pela ação tóxica da planta. Contudo as observações aqui levantadas não dão suporte a essa hipótese. Sugere-se como medida profilática evitar o pastejo exclusivo de M. maximus por cavalos, por meio de pastagens alternativas, principalmente durante o início das chuvas e rebrota da pastagem. Demonstra-se que, no Brasil, os surtos de cólica em equinos associados à ingestão de variedades de Megathyrsus, também podem ocorrer fora das regiões Norte e Centro-Oeste, desde que existam condições climáticas especiais.

Silicon (Si) is a beneficial element which was proven to enhance the tolerance of plants to excess metal in a given growth medium. However, the efficacy of Si in mitigating Cu toxicity in plants can vary between plant species and with the amount of copper (Cu) present in the soil/medium. An experiment was performed to investigate the role of Si in alleviating Cu toxicity in Tanzania guinea grass (Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania). The experimental design consisted on complete random blocks with tree replicates containing three Si rates (0, 1, and 3 mmol L-1) and four Cu rates (0.3, 250, 500, and 750 µmol L-1). The grass was grown for 62 days in a greenhouse under hydroponic conditions, with a total of 36 pots. Thirteen days after sowing, seedlings were transplanted to pots and grown for further 25 days, and then exposed to the set Cu rates for 7 days. The plants were also evaluated more for 30 days after the first harvesting. The results confirmed that the Si supply to Tanzania guinea grass can alleviate the effects of excessive Cu. Plant yield increased with Si supply and decreased with the increment of Cu rates in both growth periods. Copper concentration in diagnostic leaves (DL) and in roots, and Cu content in shoots and roots were higher in plants exposed to Cu of 750 µmol L-1 with no Si application than in other combinations. Besides reducing Cu concentration in plant tissues, the most important Si role was reducing the transport of Cu from roots to shoots, which allowed successive harvesting. Graphical abstract.

The objective for this study was to evaluate the supplementation with different non-fibrous carbohydrate (NFC) sources for grazing dairy cows in diets with high or low concentrations of rumen undegradable protein (RUP). Twelve multiparous cows averaging 30kg/d of milk production and 45±23 days in milk in a 4x4 Latin square design with 2 × 2 factorial arrangement were used. The difference in NFC content of the diets was achieved using ground corn (GC) or dried citrus pulp (DCP). Dietary RUP was altered by the partial replacement of soybean meal (LRUP) by roasted whole soybean and corn gluten meal (HRUP). Greater dry matter intake (DMI) was observed in DCP treatments compared to GC treatments (19.2 and 17.7kg/day of DM, respectively). Milk fat concentration was lower for LRUP treatments (3.4%) when compared to HRUP (3.6%). The milk protein concentration was greater for GC treatments (2.9%) in relation to DCP treatments (2.8%). Lower milk ureic nitrogen was observed when DCP diets were fed compared to those with GC (17.8 and 21.2mg/dL, respectively). The use of DCP as CNF source increased dry matter intake as well as milk fat concentration, although no differences in milk production were observed for RUP level.(AU)


Objetivou-se avaliar a suplementação com diferentes fontes de carboidratos não fibrosos (CNF) em vacas manejadas a pasto em dietas com alta ou baixa concentração de proteína não degradável no rúmen (PNDR). Doze vacas multíparas com média de 30kg leite/ dia e 45±23 dias em lactação foram utilizadas em delineamento quadrado latino 4x4 com arranjo fatorial 2 × 2. As fontes de CNF foram milho moído (MM) e polpa cítrica seca (PC). A PNDR da dieta foi alterada pela substituição parcial do farelo de soja da dieta de baixa PNDR (BPNDR) por grão de soja tostado e farelo de glúten de milho dieta de alta PNDR (APNDR). Foi observado maior consumo de matéria seca (CMS) nos tratamentos com PC quando comparado aos tratamentos com MM (19,2 e 17,7kg / dia de MS, respectivamente). O teor de gordura do leite foi menor para os tratamentos com BPNDR (3,4%) em comparação aos tratamentos com APNDR (3,6%). O teor de proteína do leite foi maior nos tratamentos com MM (2,9%) em relação aos tratamentos com PC (2,8%). Foram observados menores teores de nitrogênio ureico no leite dos animais alimentados com PC em relação aos com MM (17,8 e 21,2mg / dL, respectivamente). O uso de PC como fonte de CNF aumentou o consumo de matéria seca, bem como o teor de gordura do leite, embora não tenham sido observadas diferenças na produção de leite relacionada a alteração nos teores de PNDR.(AU)

This research aimed to evaluate the performance, body composition and net requirements for protein and energy in grazing Nellore steers supplemented with or without addition of lipids. Twenty-eight steers, 301 ± 5.8 kg BW, were used in the experiment. The comparative slaughter method was used, with four steers used as references. The remaining 24 steers were randomly distributed into four groups, during 180 days, according to treatment: only Panicum maximum cv. Mombasa grass; Mombasa grass with concentrated supplementation based on soybean meal; Mombasa grass with concentrate containing lipids from soybean oil; and Mombasa grass with concentrate containing lipids derived from soybean grains. The total DMI of the steers fed only the pasture did not differ (P > 0.05) from the average intake of the treatments with or without addition of lipids. There were no differences (P > 0.05) between treatments for total daily gain, carcass and non carcass for protein, energy and fat. The requirements of protein and energy did not differ (P > 0.05) among the treatments. When the pasture is of good quality, supplementation does not alter the body composition or the net requirements of protein and energy for weight gain. The supplementations with higher concentrations of lipids (oil and grain) were not enough to promote greater gains in fat and energy in carcass.


Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar o desempenho, composição corporal e requisitos líquidos para proteínas e energia de novilhos Nelore em pastejo suplementados com ou sem adição de lipídios.Foram utilizadas no experimento vinte e oito novilhos, 301 ± 5,8 kg PC. O método comparativo de abate foi utilizado, com quatro novilhos utilizados como referências. Os 24 restantes novilhos foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em quatro grupos, durante 180 dias, de acordo com o tratamento: apenas Panicum maximum cv. Grama Mombasa; Grama de Mombasa com suplementação concentrada à base de farelo de soja; Grama de Mombasa com concentrado contendo lipídios de óleo de soja; e Mombasa com concentrado contendo lipídiosderivados de grãos de soja. O CMS total dos novilhos alimentados apenas com a pastagem não diferiu (P>0,05) da ingestão média dos tratamentos com ou sem adição de lipídios. Não houve diferenças (P> 0,05) entre os tratamentos para o ganho diário total, carcaça e não carcaça para proteínas, energia e gordura. Os requisitos de proteína e energia não diferiram (P> 0,05) entre os tratamentos.Quando a pastagem é de boa qualidade, a suplementação não altera a composição corporal ou os requisitos líquidos de proteína e energia para ganho de peso. As suplementações com maiores concentrações de lipídios (óleo e grão) não foram suficientes parapromover maiores ganhos de gordura e energia na carcaça.

The knowledge of gas exchanges in forage plants is essential for a better understanding of the process of forage biomass production in pasture. This study evaluated the gas exchange in massai grass fertilized with increasing levels of nitrogen fertilizer (control - without nitrogen fertilizer; 400; 800 and 1200 kg ha-1year-1) and under rotational grazing by sheep, in a completely randomized design with repeated measures in time. The rest period was approximately 1.5 new leaves per tiller, as determined in the pre-test at the beginning of the experiment, providing interval of 22; 18; 16 and 13 days for the levels 0.0 - control; 400; 800 and 1200 kg ha-1 year-1 nitrogen, respectively. The animals used to lower the sward height to the recommended residual height were sheep (½ Morada Nova x ½ undefined breed), placed in paddocks of 42.3 m2. As the animals grazed, the height of the sward was monitored with a ruler until the canopy reached the recommended residual height of approximately 15 cm, corresponding to the residual LAI of exit of the animals from the paddock at approximately 1.5, as determined in a pre-test to set up the experiment. The variables stomatal conductance, leaf photosynthesis rate, leaf carbon dioxide concentration, photosynthesis/transpiration ratio, chlorophyll relative index and nitrogen sufficiency index revealed a positive linear response to nitrogen fertilization. Nitrogen fertilization level at 1200 kg ha-1year-1 caused an increment of 92.3% in leaf photosynthesis rate in relation to the control. The leaf temperature and photosynthesis/conductance ratio were reduced with increasing nitrogen levels. The leaf transpiration showed a quadratic response with maximum point with increasing nitrogen levels. Nitrogen fertilization favor the gas exchange in massai grass up to the last level tested.


O conhecimento das trocas gasosas em plantas forrageiras é essencial para melhor entendimento de como ocorre o processo de produção de biomassa de forragem na pastagem. Objetivou-se avaliar as trocas gasosas no capim-massai submetido a crescentes doses de nitrogênio (controle - sem nitrogênio; 400; 800 e 1200 kg ha-1 ano-1) e sob lotação rotativa com ovinos, num delineamento inteiramente casualizado com medidas repetidas no tempo. O período de descanso adotado foi de aproximadamente 1,5 novas folhas por perfilho, conforme determinação em pré-ensaio quando do início da instalação do experimento, propiciando um intervalo de 22; 18; 16 e 13 dias para as doses 0,0 ­ controle; 400; 800 e 1200 kg ha-1 ano-1 de nitrogênio, respectivamente. Os animais utilizados para rebaixamento do pasto até a altura residual preconizada foram ovinos (½ Morada Nova x ½ SPRD), alocados em piquetes de 42,3 m2. À medida que os animais pastejavam, a altura do pasto foi monitorada com auxílio de uma régua, até que o dossel atingisse a altura residual preconizada de aproximadamente 15 cm, correspondendo ao IAF residual de saída dos animais do piquete de aproximadamente 1,5, conforme determinação em pré-ensaio para instalação do experimento. As variáveis: condutância estomática, taxa de fotossíntese foliar, concentração interna de CO2, relação fotossíntese/transpiração, índice relativo de clorofila e índice de suficiência de nitrogênio responderam de forma linear crescente ao incremento nas doses de nitrogênio. Verificou-se aumento de 92,3% na taxa de fotossíntese para a dose de N de 1200 kg ha-1 ano-1 em relação à ausência de nitrogênio. A temperatura da folha e a relação fotossíntese/condutância foram reduzidas com o aumento das doses de nitrogênio. A adubação nitrogenada proporcionou resposta quadrática com ponto de máximo sobre a taxa de transpiração foliar. A adubação nitrogenada favorece as trocas gasosas em capim-massai até a última dose estudada.

Two common tropical grassland species, Panicum maximum Jacq. (Guinea grass) and Cenchrus ciliaris (Buffel grass) of Indo-Gangetic plains were assessed for their responses under future level of O3 (ambient +30 ppb) using open top chambers. Plants were assessed for foliar injuries, pigments, growth, biomass accumulation, histochemical localization of reactive oxygen species (ROS), antioxidant defense system and ROS scavenging activities at two stages. Foliar injuries were noticed at an early stage in P. maximum compared to C. ciliaris. Significant reductions were observed in total chlorophyll, growth and total biomass in both species. Significant increases in contents of melondialdehyde and ascorbic acid in P. maximum while total phenolics and thiols in C. ciliaris were found. Histochemical analysis showed more production of superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide in leaf tissues of P. maximum compared to C. ciliaris. It can be concluded that higher level of primary antioxidants (total phenolics and thiols) along with superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase scavenged O3 effectively in C. ciliaris causing less reduction of biomass which is used as a feed for cattles. In P. maximum, more photosynthates were allocated for defense, leading to higher reduction in total biomass compared to C. ciliaris. The leaf area ratio was higher in P. maximum compared to C. ciliaris under elevated O3. The study further suggests higher susceptibility of P. maximum compared to C. ciliaris under future level of O3 exposure.

The supply of potassium (K) is a strategy to increase the tolerance of plants exposed to Cd toxicity. The aim of this study was to verify the influence of K on the growth and potential of Tanzania guinea grass (Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Tanzania (syn. Megathyrsus maximus (Jacq.) B.K. Simon & S.W.L. Jacobs)) for Cd phytoextraction as well as to evaluate nutritional attributes of this grass under conditions of Cd stress. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design, using a 3 × 4 factorial arrangement, with three replications. Three rates of K (0.4, 6.0, and 11.6 mmol L-1) were combined with four rates of Cd (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mmol L-1) in nutrient solution. Two plant growth periods were evaluated. The increase in K supply to plants exposed to Cd rates of up to 1.0 mmol L-1 caused increase in morphogenic and production attributes, as well as reduction in tiller mortality rate, in the second growth period. K concentrations (in both harvests) increased, while calcium and magnesium concentrations in the second harvest decreased with increasing Cd rates. The high availability of Cd (1.5 mmol L-1) in the nutrient solution caused decrease in relative chlorophyll index (RCI) in both harvests. The high supply of K to plants exposed to Cd resulted in high shoot dry mass production, reducing Cd concentration in the photosynthetic tissues (which means great tolerance of the plant) and increasing the accumulation of this metal in the shoots that can be harvested. Therefore, K increases the Cd phytoextraction capacity of Tanzania guinea grass.

To evaluate the biomass components of massai grass subjected to nitrogen (N) fertilization levels (control - 0; 400; 800 and 1200 kg ha-1 year-1 of N) and under rotational stocking with sheep, this study was undertaken using a completely randomized design with measurements repeated in time. A quadratic response was observed reaching maximum values as the levels of nitrogen fertilization increased for green forage biomass, green leaf biomass, green stem biomass (5,172.9; 4,146.3; 1,033.9 kg ha-1 cycle-1, respectively), forage total density (179.1 kg ha-1 cm-1), canopy height (36.8 cm) and live material/dead material ratio (4.0) at levels 896; 934; 797; 879.2; 751.4 and 1,161 kg ha-1 year-1 of N, respectively. For all variables, oscillation was observed between the grazing cycles studied. Nitrogen fertilization has a positive response on the biomass components and canopy structure of massai grass.(AU)


Objetivou-se avaliar os componentes da biomassa do capim-massai sob lotação rotativa com ovinos e adubado com doses de nitrogênio (controle - 0; 400; 800 e 1200 kg de N ha -1 ano -1 ), em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com medidas repetidas no tempo. Constatou-se resposta quadrática, alcançando valores máximos com o incremento das doses de nitrogênio para as produções de biomassa de forragem verde, de lâmina foliar verde, de colmo verde (5172,9; 4146,3; 1033,9 kg ha -1 ciclo -1 , respectivamente) e para a densidade total de forragem (179,1 kg ha -1 cm -1 ), altura do dossel (36,8 cm) e relação material vivo/material morto (4,0) nas doses 896; 934; 797; 879,2; 751,4 e 1161 kg ha -1 ano -1 de N, respectivamente. Para todas as variáveis, verificou-se oscilação entre os ciclos de pastejo estudados. A adubação nitrogenada exerce respostas positivas sobre os componentes da biomassa e a estrutura do dossel do capim-massai.(AU)

Plants benefit from the simultaneous uptake of nitrate (NO3-) and ammonium (NH4+), which can influence the bioaccumulation of heavy metals. Nevertheless, there are no studies on the effect of nitrogen forms on grasses used for cadmium (Cd) phytoextraction. The objective was to evaluate the response of Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania to NO3-/NH4+ ratios and Cd levels. A 3 × 3 factorial experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions, in a randomized complete block design replicated three times, with three NO3-/NH4+ ratios (100/0, 70/30 and 50/50) and three Cd levels (0.0, 0.5 and 1.0 mM). Although it increased plant total nitrogen concentration, Cd exposure reduced shoot and root growth. Moreover, it altered nitrogen metabolism and induced the accumulation of NO3- and NH4+ mainly in shoots. The supply of 50/50 disturbed glutamine synthetase activity and changed root morphology under Cd toxicity. However, while the exclusive use of NO3- mitigated toxicity symptoms, by favoring Cd accumulation in roots and maintaining normal nitrogen metabolism, plants grown with 50/50 showed increased uptake, transport and accumulation of this metal. Thus, Cd uptake and accumulation are strongly related to the form of nitrogen available, and the supply of 50/50 increases the phytoextraction of this metal.

In order to grow and effectively uptake and accumulate cadmium (Cd), plants used for phytoextraction have to cope with toxicity, which may be influenced by the supply of nitrate (NO3-) and ammonium (NH4+). Thus, we evaluated the effect of these nitrogen forms on the photosynthetic and antioxidant enzyme activities of Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania (tanzania guinea grass) under Cd stress. Plants were grown in nutrient solution under greenhouse conditions and subjected to a 3 × 3 factorial experiment. They were supplied with three NO3-/NH4+ ratios (100/0, 70/30 and 50/50) and exposed to three Cd rates (0.0, 0.5 and 1.0 mmol L-1), being arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Gas exchange parameters, oxidative stress indicators, proline concentration and antioxidant enzyme activities were studied. Exposure to Cd reduced photosynthesis by causing stomatal closure and impairing electron transport. However, the simultaneous supply of NO3- and NH4+, particularly at a 50/50 ratio, restored gas exchange and improved the function of photosystem II, increasing the photosynthetic capacity of the grass. Plants grown with 50/50 showed reduced lipid peroxidation along with increased proline synthesis. Moreover, this NO3-/NH4+ ratio increased the tolerance of tanzania guinea grass to Cd by inducing high superoxide dismutase and glutathione reductase activities in shoots and roots, respectively, maintaining cellular homeostasis and reducing oxidative stress. The negative effects of Cd on photosynthesis and on the balance between oxidants and antioxidants are attenuated by the partial replacement of NO3- by NH4+ in the nutrient solution.

Apomixis is a method of reproduction to generate clonal seeds and offers tremendous potential to fix heterozygosity and hybrid vigor. The process of apomictic seed development is complex and comprises three distinct components, viz., apomeiosis (leading to formation of unreduced egg cell), parthenogenesis (development of embryo without fertilization) and functional endosperm development. Recently, in many crops, these three components are reported to be uncoupled leading to their partitioning. This review provides insight into the recent status of our understanding surrounding partitioning apomixis components in gametophytic apomictic plants and research avenues that it offers to help understand the biology of apomixis. Possible consequences leading to diversity in seed developmental pathways, resources to understand apomixis, inheritance and identification of candidate gene(s) for partitioned components, as well as contribution towards creation of variability are all discussed. The potential of Panicum maximum, an aposporous crop, is also discussed as a model crop to study partitioning principle and effects. Modifications in cytogenetic status, as well as endosperm imprinting effects arising due to partitioning effects, opens up new opportunities to understand and utilize apomixis components, especially towards synthesizing apomixis in crops.

INTRODUCTION: By mid-century, global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) is predicted to reach 600 µmol mol-1 with global temperatures rising by 2 °C. Rising [CO2] and temperature will alter the growth and productivity of major food and forage crops across the globe. Although the impact is expected to be greatest in tropical regions, the impact of climate-change has been poorly studied in those regions. OBJECTIVES: This experiment aimed to understand the effects of elevated [CO2] (600 µmol mol-1) and warming (+ 2 °C), singly and in combination, on Panicum maximum Jacq. (Guinea grass) metabolite and transcript profiles. METHODS: We created a de novo assembly of the Panicum maximum transcriptome. Leaf samples were taken at two time points in the Guinea grass growing season to analyze transcriptional and metabolite profiles in plants grown at ambient and elevated [CO2] and temperature, and statistical analyses were used to integrate the data. RESULTS: Elevated temperature altered the content of amino acids and secondary metabolites. The transcriptome of Guinea grass shows a clear time point separations, with the changes in the elevated temperature and [CO2] combination plots. CONCLUSION: Field transcriptomics and metabolomics revealed that elevated temperature and [CO2] result in alterations in transcript and metabolite profiles associated with environmental response, secondary metabolism and stomatal function. These metabolic responses are consistent with greater growth and leaf area production under elevated temperature and [CO2]. These results show that tropical C4 grasslands may have unpredicted responses to global climate change, and that warming during a cool growing season enhances growth and alleviates stress.

Various nitrate and ammonium proportions (NO3-/NH4+) in the growth media can increase metal phytoextraction compared to supplying solely NO3-. However, there are no studies showing these effects in plants under copper (Cu) contamination as well as their consequences in plant stress tolerance. The objective was to evaluate the effect of NO3-/NH4+ proportions in Cu phytoextraction by Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania and its consequence in the oxidative stress, photosynthesis, and antioxidant system under Cu stress. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design, by using a 3 × 4 factorial with six replications. Three NO3-/NH4+ proportions (100/0, 70/30, and 50/50) were combined with four Cu rates (0.3, 250, 500, and 1000 µmol L-1) in the nutrient solution. It was found that the largest Cu accumulation in the shoots occurred at the first harvest of the plants supplied with 70/30 NO3-/NH4+ and Cu 1000 µmol L-1. Such plants also displayed high concentrations of proline in the shoots as well as high superoxide dismutase activity in the roots. Malondialdehyde concentration was high in the plant parts at the Cu rate of 1000 µmol L-1. Hence, transpiration rates, stomatal conductance, quantum efficiency of photosystem II, electron transport rate, and net photosynthesis were all low at the Cu rate of 1000 µmol L-1. Catalase, guaiacol peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, and glutathione reductase activities in the roots were high when plants were exposed to Cu 1000 µmol L-1. In conclusion, the combination of NO3- with NH4+ increases copper phytoextraction that causes oxidative stress, but also favors the antioxidant system of Tanzania guinea grass in attempt to tolerate such stress.

Twenty West African dwarf (WAD) rams with average body weight of 12.43 ± 0.5 kg were used for the experiment that lasted 84 days to investigate the effects of supplementing herbaceous forage legume pellets on weight change and blood profile of animals fed Panicum maximum basal diet. Sole Panicum maximum served as the control diet and three other experimental diets were P. maximum supplemented with Lablab purpureus pellets, P. maximum supplemented with Calopogonium mucunoides pellets and P. maximum supplemented with Mucuna pruriens pellets constituted the four treatments which were arranged in a completely randomised design. The rams were divided into four groups of five animals each and were balanced for variation in live weight before they were assigned the experimental diets. Panicum maximum was offered to the animals ad libitum and legume pellets were supplemented. Significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed in weight gain of the rams. Those fed the control diet had the lowest value of 41.88 g/day while rams supplemented L. purpureus pellets had the highest value (83.66 g/day). Haematological parameters, leucocyte values and serum biochemical indices of WAD rams were significantly (P < 0.05) different across the dietary treatments at the final stage of the trial. The values for red blood cells, haemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume and mean corpuscular haemoglobin decreased slightly in rams supplemented with M. pruriens pellets. Reduction of serum biochemical parameters was also noticed in rams supplemented with M. pruriens pellets. It can be concluded that L. purpureus pellets ranked the best among the herbaceous legume pellets as supplemental feed for West African dwarf sheep resulting in higher weight gain and better feed conversion efficiency with no deleterious effect on blood profile.

A grazing trial to evaluate biological and economic efficiencies for rearing young animals exclusively on pasture from weaning at 7 months of age, with average initial weight of 220 ± 12 kg, to slaughter was conducted from May 2006 to October 2007. Two levels of combined supplementation during the first dry period and four genetic groups (F1 Angus-Nellore; ½Braford-»Angus-»Nellore; ½Brahman-»Angus-»Nellore; and ⅝Charolais-⅜Nellore) were used following a 4 by 2 factorial arrangement and eight replications in a completely randomized design. During both dry periods, eight paddocks of deferredBrachiaria brizantha were utilized. During the first dry period, concentrated mix (CM) and protein-mineral mixture (PMM) were provided in quantities of 0.8% and 0.2% of body weight (BW), respectively, for 142 days. During the subsequent rainy period, the animals were transferred to eight guinea grass paddocks for 197 days. During the second dry period, the animals were allocated to the same eight palisade grass paddocks used during the previous dry season. Steers had received supplementary diet with the same CM used before at 0.8% of BW. Animals supplemented with CM gained more BW than those supplemented with PMM; however, during the rainy season, steers supplemented with PMM performed better than those receiving CM during the preceding dry period. Using concentrate since the first dry season is a risky option in economic terms, as only the Angus-Nellore group showed a positive but small gain.(AU)


O experimento foi conduzido de maio de 2016 a outubro de 2017 com o objetivo de avaliar as eficiências biológica e econômica de animais exclusivamente em pastos, da desmama ao abate. Foram avaliados dois níveis de suplementação alimentar combinados com quatro grupos genéticos durante o período seco: F1 Angus-Nelore; ½Braford-»Angus-»Nelore; ½Brahman-»Angus-»Nelore; e⅝Charolais-⅜Nelore, seguindo-se um arranjo fatorial 4 x 2 com oito repetições em delineamento completamente ao acaso. Durante os dois períodos secos avaliados, oito piquetes de Brachiaria brizantha diferida foram utilizados. No primeiro período seco, mistura concentrada (MC) e mistura mineral múltipla (MMM) foram fornecidas nas quantidades de 0,8 e 0,2% do peso vivo (PV), respectivamente, durante 142 dias. Durante a estação das águas subsequente, todos os animais foram transferidos para oito piquetes de Panicum maximum, por 197 dias. No segundo período seco, os animais foram alocados nos mesmos oito piquetes de braquiária utilizados no período seco anterior e receberam suplementação alimentar MC, no mesmo nível, 0,8% PV utilizado anteriormente. Animais suplementados com MC apresentaram maior ganho de peso que animais recebendo MMM; entretanto, durante o período chuvoso, estes animais apresentaram melhor desempenho que àqueles que receberam MC durante o período seco. Animais Angus-Nelore apresentaram desempenho superior aos demais cruzamentos, destacando-se a precocidade da raça em alcançar o ponto de abate. A utilização de suplemento concentrado desde a primeira seca após desmama é uma opção de risco econômico, uma vez que apenas o grupo genético Angus-Nelore apresentou pequeno incremento positivo de ganho.(AU)
